Honeysuckle and Bone by Trisha Tobias
“I didn't come this close to freedom to fall apart."
Following tragic events in the US, Carina finds herself in Jamaica with a new job as an au pair, for the children of the illustrious Hall family at Blackbead House. A far cry from her homelife back in the states, Carina is hoping to put the past behind her as she finds her feet in her mothers homeland of Jamaica.
But, how can Carina put the past behind her when she is trying to hide from it while everyone at Blackbead house second guesses who she really is? Because Carina is not really who she claims to be.
Shrouded in darkness, Honeysuckle & Bone is a gothic Caribbean tale that explores class, romance & culture.
Now, when this book turned up in my mail, I was definitely pleasantly surprised to find out that Honeysuckle & Bone was a read Caribbean title. So I was keen to read it.
This book will probably serve as a great introduction to those who have no idea about “duppies”, “obeah” & “dead yaad” & YA lovers who enjoy gothic fiction.
Unfortunately, this book was not one for me at all.
The characters fell very flat for me. There was no depth to them whatsoever. Carina is probably one of the most jarring characters that i’ve read in a while.
As for the ending, so dry, so predictable, so unfulfilling. 11+ hours I will never get back.
But that’s ok, because I am sure that this book will be for others.
Off to the charity shop this book goes.
